First off, genes are NOT destiny.
Second, if you’d rather consume this content in video form, I have a Do Genetics Affect Our Ability to Lose Weight video on my IGTV channel.
I’ve been talk a lot about the factors that affect our ability to lose weight in my How Our Emotions Affect Our Ability To Lose Weight, Tips On Avoiding Micronutrient Deficiencies While Losing Weight, and The Healthiest Macronutrient Ratio For Weight-Loss blog posts. I honestly didn’t want to mention genetics because they are the least prominent, but I did because a lot of people feel as if they’re a victim to their genes.
Fortunately, this is FAR from the truth when you take into consideration that epigenetics (relating to or arising from nongenetic influences on gene expression, such as environmental factors) can influence the ways our genes are expressed!
The good news is that even if you have genetic polymorphism (a discontinuous genetic variation resulting in the occurrence of several different forms or types of individuals among the members of a single species), you can combat them with lifestyle practices. This is because DNA sequences are not the only way that can alter gene expression, rather, epigenetics also plays a role – meaning your lifestyle affects how genes turn on or off.
A lot of people want to blame their circumstances on the genes that were given to them and look past the lifestyle habits that were given to them. Our family doesn’t just pass down genes, they pass down lifestyle habits and trait that effect our gene expression.
This is because there are two types of genes. Dictator genes will give the orders for your genetic expression, such as eye color. The other type of genes is more of a receptive gene that acts as a “committee gene” and only gives suggestions for your genetic expression. These receptive genes can be easily outmatched by epigenetics (our lifestyle factors).
So, lets assume your family has a severe history of obesity, if you were to clean up your diet, start exercising regularly, incorporate fasting, and swapped out some of your old sedentary habits for some active habits, you’d most certainly start to lose weight and create YOUR OWN weight destiny.
This is when you realize that YOU have the power to influence your gene expression. None of us are victim to our genes, you just have to realize this, so you can start choosing the genes that you wish to suppress or express, it’s truly that simple! The purpose of this blog post is to help you understand that.
Now that you’re aware that YOU have the power, I hope you’re excited to take action on the things you want to manifest.
